The project combined experiential lab knowledge with academic research insights to address informal economic activity. The GNPT carried out desk research and interviews to answer learning questions on informal economies provided by UNDP.

Questions included:

Perceptions and Motivations: What are the perceptions and motivations in informal sectors? How do informal workers see themselves? Is “informality” the right way to describe this?

Formalization: What are the risks and incentives of formalizing the sector?

Digitalization: What does going digital mean for informal economies?

Environment and Sustainability: What impact (contribution or otherwise) do informal sectors have on environmental, sustainability and/or circular economies?

Equity: What impact do informal sectors have on equal opportunities?

Policy Models: What would a hybrid model (of formality
and informality) look like? Where do we see examples of this?
